There is no remote work any more. Just work. We’ve all had to make major changes to our lives this year. Many of these changes were going to happen anyway, it’s just that 2020 accelerated them.
Software development is increasingly distributed. Open source was enabled by collaboration software, first as hacks and then in packaged, built-for-purpose tooling - the social coding revolution. But now we’re taking the next steps in that revolution.
In this talk, we’ll consider where development has come from, where it is now and where it is going. We’ll also talk about how we can make it more impactful, inclusive and meaningful to more people, from geographical inclusion to parent-driven development. We need more people in software, and remote work will be key to making the industry more accessible. Finally, we’ll look ahead to the tools, platforms and methods that will define the next 10 to 15 years of work. Progressive delivery, GitOps, observability and rethinking collaboration platforms with what we’ve just learned.
